Question

How come you are seeking a different position than you’ve had?

(Are you looking to change your career?)

(Why are you looking for a different type of work?)

Answer

“I have a career plan and this was the correct next step. My current (former) job gave me the opportunity to seek the direction I have been planning.”

Demonstrating that you have direction in your life and that you have been seeking “this” job (the one you are applying for) separates you from those who might be perceived as looking for “any” job. It also shows motivation and enthusiasm.

• Of course, be prepared to discuss your goals as long as you don’t make it appear that the open position is only another short term stepping stone.

• For safety’s sake make it clear that any “next step” is years down the road and hopefully can be part of a career ladder within the organization.

Question

What kind of person is (was) your supervisor?

(Tell me about your boss.)

(Describe your boss.)

Answer

Give a positive response; use words like, “dedicated,” “committed to getting the job done,” etc. Knocking your boss or showing him/her to be “a poor manager” will only hurt you. Resist all temptation to get things off your chest. Leave negatives unsaid. The more positive comments you can (honestly) say about your current or past bosses, the better.
